Further Details
I work humanistically, integrating aspects from most of the major therapeutic models including psychodynamic, cognitive and behavioural. I work with a wide variety of presenting issues, including bereavement and loss process and depression and stress related conditions. Most of my counselling work is one to one, face to face. I supervise both individuals and in groups. Supervisees range from experienced counsellors to trainees. These work in a variety of paid and voluntary settings including educational, health care company and private. I do a small proportion of telephone counselling. Duration of therapy is both short (drawing mainly from brief-relational therapy) and long term. My EAP work has challenged me over the last three years to explore and integrate aspects of solution-focus within my humanistic and longer-term work.
My knowledge of theoretical models is wide ranging and in depth. Being up-to-date with developments in this field is partly a result of review work as well as past involvement with assessment of applications for BACP accreditation. The latter meant reading a diverse number of models, and reflecting on their viability. The former work includes writing reviews for much of the most recent literature, research and theoretical studies particularly from the USA, but also from Western Europe. Following on from my university research (‘Ethics in Private Practice counselling in the UK with particular reference to training and supervision’) I specialise in reviewing books on ethical issues although I am also interested in social psychotherapy, and in legal aspects – especially issues of precedent (or lack of!) These are areas of interest linking back to my early years studying social economics and law. Reviewing keeps me up-to-date with developments over a diverse field - allowing me to recognise the increasing integration of person-centered elements into cognitive-behavioural work, the integration of solution-focus with humanistic models, the introduction of innovative and researched models and the importance to counselling of psychological research to name just a few examples. It is especially important for me in my training work to ensure trainees are kept up to date with change in the counselling world and learn through example to take on responsibility for their own ongoing development in this area. Reading professional magazines such as those of BACP, and encouraging trainees and supervisees to do the same, reflects another aspect of this. I have attended a wide variety of workshops including a master-class on solution-focus therapy, and completed a six-month training in advanced couple counselling. In 2008 I completed a 48 hour Introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (Jacqui Porter) and a Core training workshop. Each year I attend the Confer Neuro Science as well as the Bowlby Conferences, and attend a minimum of four Analytical lectures held in Oxford. I am required each year to submit evidence of a minimum of thirty hours of continuing professional development work to maintain my BACP Accreditation status.
Over the last three years my interest in neuro science has led me to attend a number of conferences and I recently completed a three book review on this for BACP. I have also attended a four day intergenerational trauma conference. In contrast to this I have reviewed several books for BACP on CBT and Short Term Therapy. Since 2010 I have begun giving presentations to groups of counsellors on ‘Intergenerational Trauma and Attachment Issues’.
