My work over the last 10 years has led me to recognise the importance of the relationship between counsellor and client and listening to what clients want to get from their therapy. An assessment offers a client the opportunity to explore what has brought them to therapy, what to do next and what could be preventing this. I work with both short and long term as well as supervise other counsellors both individually and in a group.
My approach is to enable the client to plan their therapy by creating a focus and a possible outcome, especially when the sessions are time limited. I draw on my experience from my original training which is a person centred approach whilst integrating the psychosynthesis model of working with the client’s potential. I recently completed some CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) which has enabled clients to work on issues in between sessions, providing additional strategies for more insight.
In the past I have trained as a bereavement counsellor, worked with young people in a school setting, worked with individuals in a private practice with referrals from therapists such as homeopaths as well as being an affiliate for an Employee Assistance Programme for ten years. My experience also includes working as a trainer on a counselling diploma course. I continue to develop professionally and consider this an essential part of my work. I also work as a supervisor in a counselling service.
